Discipline mistakes are inevitable but they can be corrected. In fact, they must be corrected because they can result into thick barriers separating our children from us and from the possibility of good behaviour. Here are some mistakes that you must watch out for in your parenting. Whenever possible, find ways to avoid them.
Losing temper and shouting – When angry, you tend to shout, curse or throw everything that you see. Doing these in disciplining your kids makes them think that it’s okay to use anger and violence in relating with family and friends. Take time to calm down when you’re angry. Kids respond better to a calm and clear method of discipline. Being inconsistent – Child discipline requires the full attention of dads. If you're correcting your kids' misbehaviour without your full attention, you will have different responses to one behavioural offense at different times. Inconsistency will make it difficult for kids to understand which behaviour is bad and unacceptable. Guilt trips – Oftentimes, we make our kids feel guilty about the misfortunes happening to us especially when we're having a hard time to make both ends meet. Saying that you've given up so much to provide them a good life makes them feel responsible for you not having a happy life. This does not present you as a mature parent. Quit the guilt trips now and just impose consequences for their misbehaviour. Making comparisons – Making comparisons simply breed resentment. Kids may feel motivated to be behave appropriately and perform well in school and at home when compared to others. But such motivation will be short lived. Moreover, kids will feel bad about themselves and think that they're good enough for nothing. |
