Next to poor oral hygiene, dental phobia is another reason why children across countries suffer from problems regarding their gums and teeth. Surveys show that a big percentage of the young population had a bad experience with the dentist or the procedure itself. Some children already have the fear even before they see a dentist because of the anxiety that was passed on to them by their parents.
Parents play a vital role in eliminating dental phobia from these young minds. To start off, parents of fearful children must feel compassion instead of annoyance regarding this matter. Parents may begin to address the issue by asking their children the cause of their fear in a calm way. Recognize their explanations no matter how trivial they seem to be. Teasing them or disposing their concerns would not solve the problem. Once the children are done sharing their anxiety, parents must explain are professionals who offer help by treating their dental problems and guiding them through proper oral hygiene. Should children have intense fear of dental treatments, it would be advisable to schedule a friendly visit to the dentist. This must be done prior to or even before a certain procedure would be required. Ask the dentist and his hygienist to explain to the children how they help others with their skills. Giving the children the opportunity to throw questions and share their thoughts with these professionals can open a conversation which can dissolve the children’s apprehensions. As their profession comes with an instant fear factor among children, dentists are advised to be patient. If possible, they must smile all the time and talk in a soft voice. Being unfriendly would only cause the fear to seat deeper. The same must be observed by the hygienists and other employees to create a comfortable atmosphere in the clinic. Come the day when a certain procedure must be done, parents must prepare their children physically, emotionally and psychologically. Never bribe them with things they want just for them to meet the dentist. Let them understand that doing so is for their own sake – having healthier gums and teeth. Also, never mention blood or pain. These will totally make them cry their hearts out or plan escape on the day of the procedure. Comments are closed.
